Les Jozsa’s latest wood carving to Pecs |

Leslie Jozsa, one of the original Sopron-UBC forestry graduates - who had spent his working life as a forestry research scientist in BC before retiring to pursue his passion, wood carving – is off to one of this year’s three designated European Cities of Culture, Pecs. Les (or Laci as he is known to friends) had been commissioned by the City of Seattle to do a West Coast carving to be donated to Seattle’s sister city Pecs on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the twinning of the two cities. The unveiling will take place in Pecs on September 23rd and will be attended by the US ambassador, H.E. Eleni Tsakopoulos as well as City of Pecs officials and a representative of the Canadian embassy.

In an interview conducted by extension specialist Don Gayton, senior British Columbia forester Les Jozsareflects on a long career working in the fields of wood quality, silviculture, and dendrochronology. Jozsa,now Research Scientist Emeritus with Forintek Canada, describes the importance of distilling scientificand technical forestry information into practical terms, and extending it to industry users.
